A couple from California, USA enjoyed visiting old Samura residences and Makata Shrine on October 31st, 2025.
We welcomed them at Keisei Sakura Station and then guided them to the Millennium Center, which is connected by a corridor.
After changing into their Ninja costumes, they started exploring Samurai road "Hiyodorizaka Slope". This road is covered in a dense grove of bamboo trees. We walked the road in darkness as Samurai might have passed up and down to commute to Sakura Castle which we can't see now because Castle's buildings were demolished after the Ordinance for the abolitions of castles was issued in 1873 (Meiji 6).
They acted like real ninjas, posing as intelligence officers in the room of the 200-year-old Tajima Family residence. There are three old Samurai residences in this district and they have been well-preserved so visitors can see how samurai used to live in.
Then we moved to the Makata Shrine to pray for their happiness. The name of Makata shrine was seen in the old text compiled over 1000 years ago. The present building was constructed in 1843 (Tenpō 14) by the contemporary domain lord, Masayoshi Hotta.
They purified their hands and mouths at temizuya, a purification pavilion for ritual cleansing.
We happened to see a family visiting Makata Shrine to perform the Shichi-Go-San prayers.
Shichi-Go-San refers to the traditional Japanese festival for children who are turning three, five, and Seven years old.
We walked to Kimuraya Confectionary Shop to buy wagashi which, would be served with Matcha in the room of the Millennium Center.
They are enjoying tea time with wagashi and Matcha.
They left the Millennium Center to take a train at Keisei Sakura Station, where they were going to meet their family members who were staying at the Hotel Nikko. Then they took a train for Asakusa, where they were scheduled to have dinner together.
The next day they departed for the USA.
