Selection From the Collection of Chiba Museum of Art XVI

The exhibition selected from the permanent collection is on view from June 7 to July 3, 2022




It includes Japanese paintings and woodblock prints from the 17th to the early 20th centuries by IKE Taiga, TANOMURA Chikuden, SUZUKI Harunobu, ISODA Koryusai, UTAGAWA Kuniyoshi, TOYOHARA Kunichika, HELEN Hyde, and so on.


Images and Letters 絵と文字



The title of the woodblock print above is "The Actor Bando Hikosaburo as Akechi Mitsuhide" by TOYOHARA Kunichika (1835~1900)豊原国周. Hikosaburo played Kabuki at Shintomiza in September 1876 (明治9年). Toyochika depicted courageous Mitsuhide who betrayed his master ODA Nobunaga and killed him in 1582. You'll see a poetry and out-of-focus bamboos behind him, which contributed to enhance the figure.

Kunichika published the print in September 1876 (明治9年).


The woodblock print above is "Examples from Calligraphy and Paintings of All Ages 古今書画鑑" by KATSUSHIKA Taito II 二代葛飾戴斗 (the date of birth and death unknown). It is called Harimaze-e 張交絵、wich several pictures were drawn or printed on a single sheet of paper. He was given the go(号), or the pen name, 'Taito' which was one of Hokusai's go in around 1819.

Taito II published the print in around 1830-44 (天保期).




The title of the woodblock print above is "Taira no Kiyomori, Gio(祇王) Gijo(祇女) " by UTAGAWA Toyokuni III (1786~1864). According to 'The Tale of the Heike' 平家物語, Kiyomori got lured by HOTOKE Gozen(仏御前) who danced beautifuly in front of him. He told Gio who used to be his favourite dancer to go.

Toyokuni depicted Gio writing a poetry on the shoji, or paper screen, while her sister Gijo grinding sumi with water.

Toyokuni III published the print in 1849-52.



The title of the woodblock print above is "The Sauce-pan Shop(鍋屋)" by HYDE Helen (1868~1919) who was born in Lima, New York and lived for most of the 15 years between 1899 and 1914 in Japan. She visited China during stay in Japan, and depicted a sauce-pan shop in Suzhou 蘇州, China. She was so attracted by the Chinese characters which she promptly incorporated into her motifs.

She published the print in 1908 (明治41年).



The title of the woodblock print above is "The Actor Ichikawa Raizo as Soga Goro" by TORII Kiyomitsu 鳥居清満(1735~85). Kiyomitsu depicted Raizo playing Soga Goro who killed KUDO Suketsune to avenge his father's death. You can see KUDO family crest (家紋) in the sake cup which Raizo holding up.

The print was published in 1762 (宝暦12年).




Literati Paintings, 文人画

Taiga and Chikuden: Life and Travel 大雅、竹田 旅を描く

The title of the paint above is "Crossing the Ravine of Willows 柳渓渡渉図" by IKE Taiga 池大雅(1723~76). Taiga painted it with ink using his fingers, fingernails, and palms, while he drew the party walking through the water with smooth and fine brush stokes.

The paint was published in 1746 (延享3年).

Works which Isson drew before living in Amami Oshima are on view.

Collaborations of pottery and metal sculpture are displayed.
